The Interactions of the Five Elements (五行)

The Five Elements do interact with each other in nature. To perform any kind of interpretations or readings, the Five Elements' interactions have to be well understood. Basically, there are 3 types of interactions or cycles in the Five Elements:

1. The Production Cycle of 5 Elements

Wood produces Fire: Fire needs fuel to sustain. Therefore, wood is the fuel for fire to sustain.
Fire produces Earth: Fire engulfs everything into ashes and returns back to Earth.
Earth produces Metal: Metals are natural minerals hid beneath the Earth.
Metal produces Water: Metal does not produce water in actual but purify water.
Water produces Wood: Water grows wood. Plants need water to grow.

2. The Controlling Cycle of 5 Elements
Metal controls Wood: Axes, metal, chopped down wood.
Wood controls Earth: The roots of the plants is able to hold earth together or penetrate earth, thus breaking up soil.
Earth controls Water: Earth provides water it’s shape.
Water controls Fire: Water extinguishes fire.
Fire controls Metal: Metal is melted by fire.

3. The Weakening Cycle of 5 Elements

The 5 Elements are weakened by the element that produces it. Therefore, Metal weakens Earth, Earth Weakens Fire, Fire weakens Wood, Wood weakens Water and Water weakens Metal.
