The Heavenly Stem (天干)
First of all, the governing principle in BaZi which is the principle of 5 Elements needed to be understand. Everything in BaZi is revolved around the 5 Elements and its interactions with one another. Therefore, a good understanding of the basics is a must for the interpretation of BaZi. The basic relationship between the 5 Elements are production cycle, controlling cycle and weakening cycle.
The table below shows the Yin and Yang of the 5 Elements and the environment representation as well as the sequential cycle starting from 甲 (Jia) and end with癸 (Gui).

The Earthly Branches also known as 12 Earthly Branches are derived from 12 animal zodiac. These 12 animals are located in the middle row of the chart - The Earthly Branches.
