There are some rules applied on how Heavenly Stems combines (合). This is more to the technical aspects in interpreting a BaZi chart and is used extensively. There are 5 possible pairs of combinations in the Heavenly Stem (天干).
Jia (甲) Wood combines with Ji (己) Earth
Geng (庚) Metal combines with Yi (乙) Wood
Bing (丙) Fire combines with Xin (辛) Metal
Ren (壬) Water combines with Ding (丁) Fire
Wu (戊) Earth combines with Gui (癸) Water
12 Earthly Branches
The 12 Earthly Branches are represented by the 12 animal zodiacs. Each of the 12 animal zodiacs represents one of the Yang or Yin elements in the Five Elements.

The Relationship between 12 Earthly Branches
1. Production:
Based on the principles of Yin & Yang and the production of the Five Elements, Yang produces Yin, Yin produces Yang, Yang cannot produce Yang and Yin cannot produce Yin.
Yin (寅) Wood produces Si (巳) Fire, Mao (卯) Wood produces Wu (午) Fire, Si (巳) Fire produces Chen (辰) Earth, Xu (戌) Earth; Wu (午) Fire produces Wei (未) Earth, Chou (丑) Earth; Chen (辰) Earth, Xu (戌) Earth produces You (酉) Metal, Wei (未) Earth, Chou (丑) produces Shen (申) Metal, Shen (申) Metal produces Hai (亥) Water, You (酉) Metal produces Zi (子) Water, Zi (子) Water produces Mao (卯) Wood, Hai (亥) Water produces Yin (寅) Wood.
2. Restrained or Controlled:
Based on the principle of Yin & Yang and the Controlling cycle of the Five Elements, Yang controlled Yang and Yin Controlled Yin.
